We operate a dedicated weekly clinic that focuses on the surgical management of ingrown toenails. Our goal is to provide timely and effective relief using the most current and evidence-based methods available.
Surgical Treatment: Nail Avulsion with Phenolization
Procedure Overview
One of the most effective treatments we offer is partial or total nail avulsion, which may be performed with or without phenolization. This minor procedure, done under local anesthesia, is widely recognized as the standard surgical approach for moderate to severe ingrown toenails.
The procedure involves several key steps:
-
Anesthesia: First, a local anesthetic is administered to numb the toe completely.
-
Nail Removal: Next, the ingrown portion of the nail or the full nail is carefully removed to relieve pressure and inflammation.
-
Phenol Application: After that, an 80–88% phenol solution is applied to the exposed nail matrix to prevent future regrowth of the problematic nail section.
-
Irrigation: Then, the area is thoroughly rinsed with alcohol or saline to neutralize the phenol.
-
Dressing: Finally, an antiseptic dressing is applied, and the toe is securely bandaged to protect the wound and promote healing.
This method is minimally invasive and generally well tolerated. Moreover, it preserves the appearance of the nail and offers a high success rate, making it a preferred choice for many patients.
Efficacy and Benefits
Clinical studies have consistently demonstrated the effectiveness of this procedure. For example, one randomized controlled trial found that partial nail avulsion combined with phenolization significantly reduced recurrence rates when compared to nail avulsion alone.
Furthermore, phenolization has been associated with lower rates of postoperative infection and reduced pain levels. As a result, this approach offers a durable, long-term solution for individuals who suffer from recurring ingrown toenails.
Overall, patients benefit from minimal downtime, with most resuming regular activities within a few days. In addition, the procedure eliminates the root cause of the condition, which greatly reduces the likelihood of it returning.
Postoperative Care and Recovery
As the anesthetic wears off, some pain is normal. You may also notice:
-
Mild swelling
-
Light bleeding
-
Clear or yellow discharge from the wound
At-Home Care
-
Elevate your foot above heart level to reduce swelling
-
Rest and limit movement
-
Keep the wound clean and dry
Dressing
Change the dressing 24 hours after surgery, following your provider’s instructions. You may be advised to soak your foot in warm water first to make removal easier.
Continue changing the dressing as directed.
Keep the wound covered for the first week. In the second week, you may leave it uncovered at night to support healing.
Foot Baths
If recommended, soak your foot 2–3 times a day using:
-
Epsom salts (to reduce swelling)
After soaking, dry your foot well, apply antibiotic ointment if advised, and re-dress the wound.
Activity
Limit walking and avoid pressure on the toe. Try open-toed footwear, or wear loose shoes with cotton socks.
Continue this for about 2 weeks. Most people resume daily activities within 1–2 weeks; sports may take longer.
Prevention Tips
To help prevent ingrown toenails from returning:
-
Avoid tight shoes and high heels
-
Don’t cut nails too short or round the edges
-
Don’t pick at or tear the nail corners
When to Contact Your Doctor
Call your doctor if you notice:
-
Delayed healing
-
Fever or chills
-
Persistent pain despite medication
-
Excessive bleeding or pus
-
Redness or swelling
-
Nail regrowing into the skin
When to Consider Surgical Consultation
If you are experiencing persistent pain, swelling, or signs of infection around the toenail, it is wise to seek medical advice. Early consultation can help prevent complications and may reduce the need for more invasive treatment.
At our clinic, we offer initial consultations to assess your specific situation and recommend the most appropriate course of action. Importantly, if you choose to proceed with surgery, the consultation fee will be deducted from the total cost of the procedure.
Why Choose Our Clinic?
We specialize in the management of ingrown toenails and are experienced in performing partial nail avulsions with and without phenolization. Moreover, we understand that each case is unique. We will take the time to explain your options clearly and help you decide on the best solution based on your medical history, lifestyle, and preferences. Ultimately, our goal is to provide a safe, effective, and long-lasting resolution to the discomfort caused by ingrown toenails.
If you’re unsure whether surgical correction is necessary, we’d be happy to arrange an initial consultation. If we agree to proceed with treatment, the cost of the consultation will be subtracted from the total procedure fee.
